SUWANEE, Georgia, January 30, 2018 – A multi-zone cooling and heating system from Mitsubishi Electric US, Inc.'s Cooling & Heating Division (Mitsubishi Electric), a leading manufacturer of Zoned Comfort Solutions™, was selected by the Leading Suppliers Council of the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) to be included in The New American Home® 2018.

Since 1984, The New American Home (TNAH) has been the official idea home project of the annual International Builders’ Show (IBS). TNAH showcases residential building and architecture best practices including innovative design concepts, state-of-the-art products and the latest construction techniques. This year’s home is a Tuscan style, two-story home located in the Bella Collina golf community in Montverde, Florida, just outside of Orlando. Each of the 6,600 square foot home’s levels was designed to have a unique identity, unified through the use of earthy textures and building materials that create an air of sophisticated comfort throughout the home. The home was designed and built by Legacy Custom Built, Winter Park, Florida.

“We enjoyed the process of designing and building The New American Home 2018, and are honored to have been selected for this prestigious national project,” said Mike Rowen, president, Legacy Custom Built. “It was a unique opportunity to collaborate with a variety of different suppliers, such as Mitsubishi Electric Cooling & Heating, whose common goal is energy efficiency and sustainability. It’s our intention – as well as those of other builders from around the country – that many of our future projects follow suit.”

In recent years, with an ever-increasing industry focus on energy efficiency and sustainability, Two Trails - Sustainable Building Consulting has worked closely with build teams to incorporate products that exceed requirements for certification to the Emerald level of the National Green Building Standard™. TNAH 2018 has a proposed Home Energy Rating System index of 46 and is expected to be 36 percent more efficient than the average new code-built home. According to Two Trails, homeowners with this level of efficiency enjoy approximately $1,300 in energy cost savings annually. This home is also targeted to become certified in the EPA’s ENERGY STAR® and Indoor airPLUS programs, and as a DOE Zero Energy Ready Home.

“Mitsubishi Electric appreciates the opportunity to participate in one of the building industry’s most respected and long-lived programs, and to introduce more home builders to our Zoned Comfort Solutions,” said Mike Smith, senior marketing manager, residential at Mitsubishi Electric US, Inc.’s Cooling & Heating Division. “Today’s consumers demand efficiency, comfort and healthy indoor environments. They expect solutions, such as zoning, that give them personalized control of home functions. We appreciate this chance to educate a wide audience on the benefits of zoning in homes of all sizes – from tiny homes and passive homes, to the New American Home and larger.”

Mitsubishi Electric provides space conditioning to nine separately controlled zones in TNAH 2018 through a system that incorporates several different indoor unit options: a ductless ceiling-cassette, wall-mounted units, and ducted multi-position and low-profile air handlers. Outdoor heat pumps with variable-speed compressors add efficiency, along with a level of quietness. One of the home’s many unique features is that all of its electric elements and systems – including the cooling and heating systems – are controlled through an iPad, eliminating the need for wall controls.

Specific Mitsubishi Electric products used in the project and installed by M&S Air Conditioning and Appliance Service of Central Florida include:

  • Three 4-ton multi-zone INVERTER-driven outdoor units (MXZ-8C48NA)
  • One single-zone 2-ton INVERTER-driven outdoor unit (MUZ-GL24NA)
  • Four multi-position ducted air handlers (MVZ-A12/18/24AA7)
  • Two low-profile ducted air handlers (SEZ-KD09NA)
  • Two wall-mounted ductless indoor units (MSZ-GL24NA)
  • One ceiling-cassette ductless indoor unit (SLZ-KA09NA)
