Have you listened to HVAC School – For Techs, By Techs recently? The October 27 podcast episode featured our own Chad Gillespie, senior manager of Performance Construction and Dana Fischer, residential area manager. They were joined by Scott Libby, one of our Diamond Contractors and owner of Royal River Heat Pumps in Freeport, Maine.
The hour-long conversation with host Bryan Orr centered around heat pumps — specifically, their performance in cold climates — and addressed both skepticism and unawareness among consumers.
“I spent 20 years of my career saying heat pumps don’t belong in Maine and now we have 16, 18 guys leaving the shop every day doing nothing but heat pumps,” Libby noted. “We have no oil or gas parts in the vans or the warehouse and we have next to zero service calls. It’s all preventative maintenance and I’ve never had a time in my career [until now] where people will stop me in the supermarket and say ‘I love my heat pump’. They never did that with the big oil tank in the corner.”
Other topics covered on the episode include:
- The worldwide push for strategic electrification
- How refrigerant changes and faster compressor speeds have improved heat pump operation
- Sizing and application options that allow today’s heat pumps to match homeowners’ aesthetic and comfort expectations
- How heat pump technology stood up against a polar vortex that recently swept New England, particularly in weatherized, tightly-built homes
- Rates of heat pump adoption in Europe versus the U.S.
- Supplementing heat pump systems with solar energy
Our Zoned Comfort Solutions® all-electric heat pumps with Hyper-Heating INVERTER® (H2i®) technology are designed to operate in outdoor temperatures as low as -13° F.
